SLOW AND STEADY IS THE WAY TO GO

Abraham Lincoln once said, “I walk slowly but I never walk backward.” This is a very wise saying and if every person who made a New Year’s weight loss resolution bore this in mind at all times, the attrition rate would be much lower.

The majority of people who start a weight loss program quit. They give it their best in the beginning but as the days pass, their determination and drive falters and slowly dies off. They throw in the towel and quit.

They do this because they put in too much effort in the beginning and expect quick results. That’s a calamitous error, because with weight loss, the results come slowly and an intense all-out effort is neither sustainable nor fun.

You want to make slow, measurable progress. This applies to both your diet and your training. Record down in your journal what you eat daily and what exercise you do. Look for one small way to improve on both daily. It doesn’t have to be an earth-shattering change. A small positive one will do.

For example, eating a teaspoon of cumin seeds daily helps accelerate your weight loss by 3 times. So, aim to eat one teaspoon of it daily. Or you could try and ensure that you drink enough water to stay hydrated.

If you eat junk food twice or thrice a week, cut out the fries and sodas. Over time, reduce your frequency of consuming such foods. Little by little, reduce consumption till you no longer have the habit of eating these detrimental foods.

When training, if you have lost a few pounds, see if you can make your workouts a little more challenging. If all you’re doing is walking, try walking up hills. You could also use ankle weights for added resistance.

You will only progress if you keep challenging yourself. Slow progress is better than no progress. Even if the change may seem miniscule, it all adds up over time. Walking an extra 10 minutes daily may not seem like much but over the course of two weeks, that’s an extra 2 hours of exercise. Notice how everything makes a difference when compounded over time?

It’s important to be proud of yourself when you are compliant with your diet and training. Do not wait till you get the body you desire before you feel proud. Success is a series of small accomplishments along the journey. Celebrate each little milestone. Just don’t do it with junk food.

Avoid temptations such as a fridge stocked with unhealthy foods or going out for a night with the boys, if you know there’s going to be alcohol served. Are these sacrifices? Yes… but these are necessary sacrifices. Your should not sacrifice what you want most for what you want now.

If you have drinks with the boys every Friday night, make it just once or twice a month. Tell your friends that you’re trying to lose weight. After they’ve made their fair share of jokes, they’ll understand and support you.
