How Fiber Can Help Trim Your Waistline

When most people try to lose weight, they often resort to crash diets that leave them feeling weak and hungry. Not only is this strategy potentially dangerous, it rarely proves effective in the long-term.

So what is the best way to trim your waistline without risking your health? According to Paul A. Achoa, a health and fitness expert who writes instructionals focused on how to lose weight, the best diet plans are centered on eating.


“It may seem counter-intuitive, but eating is a critical part of any weight-loss program.” Achoa said. “That being said, you need to eat the right things.”

Foods that promote weight loss

Achoa recommends foods high in fiber, because they tend to be lower in calories and have the power to curb hunger.

“Fiber helps reduce hunger in two ways,” he said. “First, it helps regulate blood-sugar levels by preventing big surges in insulin. Second, it takes longer to digest, which ultimately keeps you feeling full for longer periods of time.”

Achoa says foods rich in sugar tend to promote hunger, because they trigger big insulin spikes, which lowers blood glucose levels and causes hunger.

Achoa says dieters should avoid foods with high glycemic values, such as white bread, white rice, potatoes and corn. Instead, he recommends high-fiber whole grains, cucumbers, cauliflower and leafy green vegetables, which have lower glycemic values.

“Foods that have a high glycemic index enter the blood-stream quickly,” he said. “When this happens, the body releases insulin to deal with the increased blood sugar levels. Studies have shown that when this happens, the body begins to make fat.’

Benefits of low-glycemic foods

While high-glycemic foods spur weight gain, low-glycemic foods encourage weight loss. Achoa says that, because foods with a low glycemic value take longer to digest, insulin levels don’t ascend as quickly, and the body is able to enjoy a steady stream of energy without storing as much fat. Because these foods also tend to be rich in fiber, they are good at curbing appetites.

“It may seem counter-intuitive, but studies have shown that people who eat big, whole-grain breakfasts tend to lose more weight, because the fiber keeps them feeling fuller for longer periods of time,” Achoa said. “So, it’s not just about eating breakfast; it’s about eating high-fiber, protein rich foods that will make the entire dieting process easier in the long-run.”

By consistently eating a high-fiber diet, Achoa says dieters will see quicker results without having to endure the hunger pains associated with the typical crash dieting plans.
